Partner City for NYC Guidelines for the Internet of Things

In 2016, City of Portland signed on as a partner city to the NYC Guidelines for the Internet of Things. These guidelines provide a framework for Portland and our partners to responsibly deploy connected devices. Responsible deployment means using devices to meet city goals and mitigate risks. Having many cities and communities use the guidelines is important to establish a robust framework. Standards to mitigate risk and maximize public benefit from these new technologies need to be furthered.

Smart City PDX commits to following the five principles in the guidelines:

  • Privacy + Transparency

  • Data Management

  • Infrastructure

  • Security

  • Operations + Sustainability

We are also committed to considering the sustainability of the device hardware itself. Minimizing electronics waste and improving the ability to reuse devices are important considerations.
