City of Portland Open data day 2021 celebration

Open Data Day happened last March 6 and the City of Portland organized four different presentations on how open data works at the City. 

This was the first time that the City of Portland celebrates Open Data day. The goal for the open data program is to make data available to the public, creating ways to engage with community needs and opportunities.

On March 5, the city organized 4 different presentations to show how bureaus use data for different purposes. Please, look at the summaries and link to the video recordings below:

 

“Data, Strategy, and Decision-Making: Using Performance Management to Improve Outcomes” by Angel Butel and Douglas Imaralu (City Budget Office – Performance program). This presentation shows how open data leverages effective performance management in city bureaus.

Presenters. Angela Butel and Douglas Imaralu are financial analysts in the City Budget Office. They are budget analysts and co-lead the Citywide performance management program.

“How to include demographic data in your data collection strategy” by Danielle Brooks (Office of Equity and Human Rights). This presentation describes the demographic data standard for collecting equity data in the City. 

Presenter. Danielle Brooks is the Civil Rights Title VI & Equity Manager at the Office of Equity and Human Rights. She has been working on developing the demographics data standard for the city.

“Open Data as a path for better public trust and engagement” by Hector Dominguez (Open Data Coordinator – BPS- Smart City PDX). This presentation explores how open data can be an effective way to create transparency and public engagement for city programs.

 

Presenter. Hector Dominguez is the Open Data Coordinator at the City of Portland, Oregon. Hector has led the open data, privacy and surveillance technologies initiatives. His work includes ethical use of technology and the city’s privacy and open data toolkit.

“ESRI hubs and how cities use open data sites” by John Ruffing – ESRI. The citywide open data portal uses ESRI platform and tools to make data available in diverse forms. Learn about the tools used for building the city open data portal. Data can be accessible by partners and the public, using leading edge technology for open data management.


Presenter. John Ruffing is the city of Portland ESRI liaison. He helps local governments and organizations to derive meaningful insight, visualize and manage data for solving real world problems.  He has a B.A. in Business with concentrations in G.I.S. and Spanish.  He has been working in the spatial intelligence and technology industry for over 15 years from private industry to local government.
