The Smart City PDX program to celebrate 2023 Open Data Day
BPS’ Smart City PDX program is celebrating open data day by organizing public events to create more awareness about how the City of Portland uses data in their operations and decision making, and letting people collaborate with others in exploring data and developing tools to facilitate its visualization and access.
Open data is a proactive way in which government agencies, and organizations, publish information and data about its activities. Open data is part of efforts for more government transparency and create new channels for public engagement.
The first event is a series of presentations on March 22 given by data experts. These presentations include topics data justice, data literacy, data governance, and mobility data. Register to attend the live presentation on March 22 here.
The second event is an Open Data Disco Tech. A "Disco Tech" is short for "Discovering Technology." It is a term coined by the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition which defines a replicable model for a multimedia, mobile neighborhood workshop fair. Disco Techs are designed so that participants learn more about the impact and possibilities of technology within our communities.
The City of Portland 2023 Open Data Disco Tech will kickoff on March 24 with an online presentation where Hector Dominguez, the open data coordinator, will describe the event and provide a first glimpse of the data available.
The main Open Data Disco Tech event will be on March 25 and everyone is welcome regardless of their experience with data. Different tables or virtual rooms will be formed to collaborate or learn and includes:
Introduction to data 101 - data basics
Exploring Portland neighborhoods
Mobility data
Public safety data
Participants can join in person (limited to 30 people) or remotely and get role within the team. We look for storytellers, data analysts, designers, and people who want to share their expertise with others. Women, youth, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are encouraged to join.
